Clifford was born in Montevello, Alabama in 1937 raised alongside five brothers and four sisters. His parents Nettie and Jimmy offered a warm and loving home, in which they raised their children. It was a place Clifford recalls where so many fond memories were created. His mother was a wonderful woman. She worked as a lunchroom cook and took in wash and ironing to generate income for the family. He speaks of her often remembering her kind-heart and caring ways. Clifford credits her with being his biggest fan and supporter both on and off the baseball diamond. His dad Jimmy, like so many other men in that town, was a coal miner. He was a hard worker and lent financial support to his siblings as well as raising ten children of his own. Jimmy was both a father and friend to Clifford. Dad and mom were both committed Christians. They were church volunteers whose priorities were centered on raising a close-knit family.

During his youth, Clifford had three close friends, Jim, Ike and Henry. They were inseparable then and are still best friends today. They played baseball in the street, in front of Almont Elementary where they attended grade school. This is where he played some of his most memorable games. Although they rarely had access to the best equipment, they were not to be denied an afternoon of baseball. He remembered the pre-game rituals of hunting down an old tennis ball and a worn out walking stick. Clifford recalled one game in particular; he had stepped up to the plate to bat against a lady that had stepped in to pitch to the boys. Her pitch was on the mark and so was his bat - The result was a blistering line drive that returned to the mound in a hurry, striking the pitcher square in the eye. Clifford was so worried that she was hurt, and to this day is grateful that on that afternoon they were using a tennis ball. Clifford went on to high school - Prentice Hall in Montevallo. His love for baseball grew, as did his interest in some of the greats like Willie Mays and Jackie Robinson. They were his baseball heroes, an inspiration that led him to continue to pursue baseball after high school.

Clifford made his Negro Leagues debut in 1958 at third base with the Birmingham Black Barons. Later that same year, he was traded to the Memphis Red Sox, wore jersey number 25, and played left field.

In the years that followed, DuBose returned to his hometown, married Mary Gene Jones and raised four children. He continued to play ball for a number of years in the Industrial Leagues of Birmingham, Alabama. One of his fondest memories while playing at Stockham was made in the championship game of 1964. As the team's left fielder, he came to the plate to hit a game-winning homerun. Since his retirement, Clifford has found an interest in gardening and loves watching sports on television.

The DuBose family remains close to this day. They share joyful memories, love and laughter in telephone conference calls and family reunions whenever they can.
