Mr. Dean was an original "Red Baller" for general Patton's 3rd Army, Tuskegee Airmen and the 76th tank outfit. He retired from the military with 2 EPO Battle Stars and good conduct medals.
Jimmy pitched for several semi-pro teams before he found himself on the mound for the Philadelphia Stars. He made a move to New York in 1947, where he pitched for the New York Cubans and the New York Black Yankees. Later that season, he joined a traveling New York All-Star team and toured the countryside to close the season. His travels brought him full circle, back to the Philadelphia Stars for the 1948 and 1949 seasons. He took pride in his performances on the mound recalling pitching five no hit ball games. "I am the real Jimmy Dean" was the phrase he used most often when he greeted interesting fans.
After baseball, Mr. Dean returned to the classroom to complete his education. He hit the books as hard as he threw a baseball, in pursuit of an interest in chemistry. His tossed another win, scored a college graduated, and secured a future career. He was hired by Merck Pharmaceuticals and worked there for 33 years.
Jimmy Dean is one of our NLB Living Legends Remembered. He died before the Signature Series One (SS1) trading card collection was complete. A limited quantity of Jimmy Dean SS1 trading cards has been released, bearing a copy of his personal signature applied using a hand stamp and permanent black ink.
